Eureka! Extraordinary discovery unlocks secrets of the ancients
By David Keys and Nicholas Pyke
17 April 2005

Thousands of previously illegible manuscripts containing work by some of the greats of classical literature are being read for the first time using technology which experts believe will unlock the secrets of the ancient world.

Among treasures already discovered by a team from Oxford University are previously unseen writings by classical giants including Sophocles, Euripides and Hesiod. Invisible under ordinary light, the faded ink comes clearly into view when placed under infra-red light, using techniques developed from satellite imaging.

The Oxford documents form part of the great papyrus hoard salvaged from an ancient rubbish dump in the Graeco-Egyptian town of Oxyrhynchus more than a century ago. The thousands of remaining documents, which will be analysed over the next decade, are expected to include works by Ovid and Aeschylus, plus a series of Christian gospels which have been lost for up to 2,000 years.

This will be very interesting to watch the developments on these documents. As a Christian, I'll be very interested to see what these Christian documents they speak of, say.

I too, am very excited about the possibly lost Gospels. I wonder if they will have the Lost copy that he Carpocratians used (it was a modified Gospel of Matthew or Mark) that supported their wild views of worship. Their woship services were known to involve wife swapping in church and turned into a massive orgy. I know this is freaking wierd, but I have studied a little of this stuff and there was a ton of different "Christian" sects, that would make today's seperation look small. It will be interesting what they find.

I'd love to see the text of the lost Gospels but there would be much "wailing and gnashing of teeth" if the gospels portrayed situations such as you described. :x

It sounds like they changed the text to support their CULT. I wonder if they changed the part where there is a warning about changing the text?

This is a pretty interesting development. I'll do some research and see what I can come up with. The Oxyrynchus Papyri contain some great manuscripts of early biblical texts.

As far as "lost gospels," secular scholars have an annoying tendency to refer to the ancient gnostic gospels in the same breath they refer to those which are a part of the canon of Scripture recognized by Christians. The findings will most likely be an excellent source of information concerning history, but should be read as such - history books which are not inspired or authoritative.

And all God's people said, Amen!
