View Full Version : Something HAS to be done - Gooners and Nat. Anthem

Something HAS to be done about the Gooners and the crass, arrogant, un-patriotic, and assinine addition they make to the end of the National Anthem. The end of it they replace "brave" with "sooners." You think that we could convince all the Cowboys fans that attend the game to yell "BRAVE" at the end to drown out all the gooner fans yelling "sooner" at the end?

I've been to a football game...and a basketball game in Norman...and voiced my opinion about it then. I will do the same Saturday. Anyone in my immediate vicinity will know how disgusted I am.

When I bring this up with my gooner friends their automatic retort is, "The Atlanta Braves do it!" Like I'm somehow complicit with the Atlanta Braves doing that just because I happen to live in Georgia. I've never been to a Braves' game and am not a fan of MLB. I disagree with the Braves doing that, too.
It is disrespectful.

Similar to how the Braves yell "home of the Brave(s)" at the end of the national anthem, during the Dallas Stars hockey home games, the crowd yells Stars during "whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight" and "O say, does that star(s)-spangled banner yet wave"
I don't think you can really compare that to what the gooners do. that's just being a pompous ass.

Because you have heard it time and again doesn't mean that mangling our National Anthem is valid. That's not a defense. Nor is the supposed guy wearing an OSU shirt a good excuse. I've never heard *any* defense other than that from Sooner fans other than that one.
I have never seen a shirt like that, if that's worth anything.
So, without the "he does it too" defense, can you defend the perversion of our National Anthem at every Sooner home game? What possible defense is there, if I grant you that other classless teams do it, and that one guy sometime may have had a shirt like that. I'll give you those examples, now give me a rational defense of the practice. Take your time.

The argument that we say "STATE" at the end of Oklahoma is moot. They have modified the song to add their own fight song (or Yale's as the argument goes) at the end of Oklahoma.

Folks, you'll never get them to change. They can't comprehend why it's improper.
We all live in the "land of the free" because of "the brave". Watch the ones that bastardize the anthem by inserting the word "sooner" for "brave". Ten will get you a hundred that they don't sing any of it until they get to that last word. They have no idea.
I'll admit that sometimes I can't get through the entire anthem. Right toward the end I get this thing in my throat that just won't let another word out.
My only advice is to sing the anthem as loud and as proud as you can. Ignore the disrespectful fans. Lead by example. The more we bitch about it, the more they're going to do it because they know their disrespectful actions really upset us.

I don't know if "largest" equals "best", or how good "one of" implies, but I'm pretty sure you are pitiful enough to just make something up to try to win an arguement that is pointless to begin with.

Can you explain what's so wrong with it? And I mean something beyond just "OMG! It's our national anthem!!!" I don't see anything offensive about it at all. I could understand if we were making fun of the song or changing the lyrics to something like "home of the... F*** Texas!". If you really want to analyze it, we're doing nothing more than saying that the home of the Sooners is America and we're proud of that fact. Nothing wrong with that! :)
There are a lot of people that get pissed about it (Sooner fans too), and I respect their opinion, but I'm not going to stop doing it simply because they don't like it. I think they're just blowing it way out of proportion and just grasping at something to get pissed about. Really, is it going to change your life in a negative way? Is it hurting anybody? IMO, the people that get pissed are taking life far too seriously and are too caught up in symbolism, which I don't understand. I don't care about songs, flags or any other symbolism you want to throw in there. I care about this country and the men and women who serve to protect our way of life. If you're going to say we're disrespecting them, I'd love to see a tangible explanation.
Ultimately, the people that don't like it are just going to have to deal with it. Get pissed all you want, it won't stop me from doing it. If anybody wishes to confront me about it, fine, I can handle myself, but if you harass me, we'll both be getting thrown out of the stadium. :D ;)

My grandfather was a die-hard Sooner until the day he died. It's not about conforming to the masses. It's about showing respect for the flag, the country, and the military (the "BRAVE" in the national anthem).
Freedom of speech to disrespect the flag, the country, and the BRAVE was gained by the blood of those that are being disrespected by the unpatriotic people that slander the national anthem and abuse the American flag.

Thank God all you Sooner fans are here to uphold the First Amendment rights granted them, because when Oklahoma State fans honor the country by singing "Home of the Brave", I can't help but think we're a flock of ignorant sheep worshiping a sacred cow.
Hell, OSU's conformity is in fact so un-patriotic that singing The National Anthem correctly feels like declaring jihad on Stillwater, so I thank you for making this point clear to me. It goes back to a respect issue. But hey...do what you want. Maybe Boren can write a letter to congress and the President and have the words officially changed.
In Stillwater we are going to sing the National Anthem...ALL of it, not just 4 words at the end...with our hands on our hearts. And in Norman...or anywhere else for that matter...I will be doing the same thing.
I refuse to let 80k idiots alter my respect for our National Anthem.
If you think all 80K plus fans in Norman change out "brave" for "Sooners" in the national anthem, then you're loopy...

But, back to your disrespect for anything other than your cheating tradition. My suggestion, get your panties out of a wad, and realize that freedom of speech is more patriotic than conforming to the masses.
It's the ol' Freedom of Speech weasel move by someone who probably doesn't understand the concept.
You absolutely have the freedom to disrespect the National Anthem. People who respect the Anthem have the freedom to call you on it. Don't weasel out behind "freedom of speech" when you obviously don't understand what it is. It's not freedom from criticism.
Nobody is saying that there should be a law requiring you to sing your national anthem without reference to a petty football team (I'd say the same if OSU morons inserted "Cowboys" into our anthem). I'd defend your right to desecrate the song, but I'll always challenge your complete lack of wisdom in doing so.
The good news is that at least a sizable minority of Sooner fans thinks the same...that the "tradition" is an embarrassment to the State, to OU, and to the Country. That's why so few teams do it. Most are not so petty and self absorbed.
Would it be cool to you to recite the national anthem and and pledge allegiance to the Sooners? How about breaking out into it during a prayer?

I don't give a rat's ass if you're a veteran. That still doesn't justify the way you're slandering our country.
My grandfather was a die-hard Sooner until the day he died. He paid a friend of his to take a swim test for him in December of 1941 so he could enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he served the duration of World War II. I think the three things he loved most were OU, his country, and his family - probably in that order, too, but it pissed him off to no end that people would scream "home of the Sooners".
Your grandad cheated to get into the USN and you are proud of that?

Of course you can use GI bill benefits at OSU. Several of my friends did. What they were probably speaking of are other military programs that use the University of Oklahoma as the degree granting university. Basically you study at home, a small college, or a military base and they grant you a degree from OU.
http://www.goou.ou.edu/nap/cameron.htm
On one hand it is good to the servicemembers that that are able to get a degree without leaving an air base or army post. On the other hand, it sort of diminishes the value of a OU diploma when they are whored out all over the world to people that have never even been to Oklahoma, never mind the actual campus. I only know about this because one of my good friends from the army years ago just called me yesterday to give me crap about the bedlam game. See, his degree is from the University of Oklahoma. But, he didn't know that was where is was from until he was about to graduate from PA school. His only ties to the university are that piece of paper and calling me to give me a hard time when OSU loses a bedlam game. That, sir, is what speaks volumes to me. A proud OU graduate that has spent less time in Oklahoma than Calvin spent on the phone illegally calling recruits.

You are deflecting attention from your petty little disrespectful tradition by claiming that others do it; and that people who call you on it only do it because they're your rival. Speaking of Boone, I spoke with an OU official yesterday during the game that sits in on OU's weekly Football Game Ops meetings. He said OU received an inquiry from Mr. Pickens asking to be able to have his limousine driven as close as possible to the GFOMS to drop him off for the game. Seems OU accommodated this same request two years ago when he attended the Bedlam game, but it was a big hassle pulling barracades, clearing fans out of the way and the like. This year they told him he could park at the Lloyd Noble Center and ride CART like other fans to and from the stadium...

It is their freedom and their right, but that does not excuse the tackiness of it all. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's unpatriotic, but I would say that it is disrespectful. It also the right of anyone on the street to tell any soldier or airman they see to piss off, or whatever else, but that doesn't make it less tacky or disrespectful. I, as a current military officer, find "Home of the Sooners" to be tacky and disrespectful to what everyone in uniform now and in the past has done for everyone else in this country.

Not a smack at anyone or any school. I work in the Energy Business all over Oklahoma, Texas, the Louisiana Coast, etc and I just don't seem to run into any osu grads. Not Attorneys, Bankers, Engineers, or Accountants. There has to be thousands of them out there but you just don't see them.
T-Boone is the only Businessman I came name that I know came from osu. I have always found that a bit strange. I deal with tons of guys/gals that graduated from Texas, A&M, OU, Baylor, and tons of smaller schools such as Wasburn in Topeka and on the odd occassion it has come up they wonder the same thing.
If you work in the enegry business and you don't run into OSU grads you must not be in the right places. I know several.
Your statement is kinda like the DOK printing the map of oklahoma and its 77 counties and only showing 6 osu alumnus in Bryan county. I know of 8 who live in my neighborhood alone.
The only uo grads I know are attorneys, should I assume that's all they offer at ou?

so proud that your daddy is rich.
this banter over the success of grads is juvenile. there are successful OU grads all over the country. there are successful OSU grads all over the country.
geez. i, personally, am proud of any product of our state school systems who utilize that degree to accomplish things, whether, OSU, OU, or even NEOSU.
also, i'm glad that you, OKCPoke, believe yourself to be so much better than so many people. thank you for letting us talentless, OU fans (and grads) breathe the same air as you.
This all came about as a retort to your fans who, having never even attended a class there try to discredit OSU fans as losers because the FB team does not succeed as often as uos does. I don't feel a bit better or believe I'm better than anyone else, even those fools I am talking about who scream so loudly for your team. Am I glad I'm related to 3 successful grads from OSU, yes. Does it make me better, no. Don't get your panties in a wad, it's your bandwagon fans that breed this type of attitude in Stillwater. You can breathe any air you want, it just happens to be sweeter in Stillwater.

What I find funny about this thread is the fact that most of the people on here trying to justify the slander of our National Anthem happen to be "veterans."

it's just so sad that these "bandwagon fans" can "breed" such a foul attitude in stillwater.
do i love all the bandwagon fans? not particularly. i do love that they support the university financially and improve the program by buying merchandise, attending games, and ensuring that OU is on TV every week. in the end, i can tolerate some bandwagoners for the better.
although, i would wish that OSU fans would be able to differentiate between the bandwagon fans and true fans, and quit being so condescending to all OU fans because they let a few bandwagoners get them so riled up.

What is so funny about "veterans"? The fact they have balls and you don't? Yes that is a hoot!

I have some good friends that are uo fans, we have very nice relationships even during bedlam weekend. As I said, it's your bandwagon fans and a bunch of your young fans that give those with a sane attitude the black eyes. Screaming degrading comments and getting in your face when confronted with the game...pitiful. I have no problem differentiating between the fans, it's very obvious which are which. The problem is that there are SO MANY bandwagon fans it's difficult to find the others and why a football teams success makes those losers feel superior is beyond me but never the less, it's fact and there are so many of them it's hard not to step on one when crossing the street.
