I need to ask some questions for those who are experts on the economy. My questions concerns taxes: Does raising taxes or cutting them help the economy? I know that tax rates are often cut and the capital gains tax has often been raised, but which works better?

Yep. I'm more interested in our ongoing experiment to see if we end up like Japan ... sleepy economy for a couple decades after they busted their bubbles. I'm mostly of the view our economic future is pretty much preordained now that the downward spiral has begun. Stock market can be a different matter ... it can go up and down a little or a lot over short periods of time ... no telling when.

Anyway, it's snowing up here on New Year's Eve and tonight is dinner at the best Italian restaurant in the area. Will see how full the place is ... some of the stuff around here has been a little like a ghost town lately ... probably cause the Wall Streeters can't find their bonuses ... and hedgies are going up in smoke ... or down in flames ... whichever. With that said, hopes for a good 2009 to all.

On my recent trip to Las Vegas my party was the only one in Hank's, a high end steak-house on a Sunday around 8:00. It was sort of eerie. One friend said, "Well, it is Sunday night." And I said, "When I lived here, the night of the week didn't matter, its Vegas."

We also went shopping on a Saturday afternoon two weeks before X-mas and were the only ones in Armani Exchange and were joined by one other shopper at Abercrombie. Strange times indeed.
