111th Congress Convenes With Oaths of Office

WASHINGTON -- The House and Senate have convened for the start of the 111th Congress and the challenge of rehabilitating the country's struggling economy.

Vice President Dick Cheney began swearing in 34 of the 35 senators who were elected on Nov. 4. One seat -- from Minnesota -- remains undecided because Norm Coleman is challenging the state Canvassing Board's certification of Democrat Al Franken as the winner.

One other spot -- the Illinois seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama -- also remains vacant. The Senate on Tuesday refused to seat Gov. Rod Blagojevich's designated replacement, former state Attorney General Roland Burris, to the position.

In all, nine new senators and 54 House members started their new lives on Capitol Hill. And they are joined by two freshmen non-voting delegates.

Vice President-elect Joe Biden was sworn in as the Delaware senator before resigning so that his replacement can be appointed by Gov. Ruth Ann Minner. Biden's former chief of staff, Ted Kaufman, is taking over the position.

Also returning to serve his 10th term is Sen. Ted Kennedy, who was re-elected to represent Massachusetts despite being diagnosed with brain cancer last year.

Over in the House after the calling of the quorum, 434 lawmakers proceeded to elect the speaker of the House. In a bit of manufactured drama, Democrats nominated Nancy Pelosi and Republicans nominated Minority Leader John Boehner.

The atmosphere in the House was family-friendly as children, grandchildren and other relatives joined lawmakers in the large chamber, lit for television.

One House seat is vacant. Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel resigned to become President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff.

Apart from Biden, at least three lawmakers will not be there for long. Rep. Hilda Solis, a Democrat, was nominated as secretary of labor in the Obama administration; Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is departing Congress to become secretary of state and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar was tapped to become interior secretary.

Besides the economy, lawmakers will face considerable early work in reviewing Obama's Cabinet nominees.

Well, there's one thing we can glean from this. If Democrats really are supporting Pelosi, they're all just as loony as she is.

In what respects do you consider her to be too liberal? Does she take an especially liberal position on a specific policy area of interest to you?

I'm wondering on what policy does she not take a liberal position on? Can anyone name just one?

I really don't see why this thread should be longer than necessary by asking the wrong questions?

osugrad08,

What is it that you don't like about Nancy Pelosi?

I don't like Nacy Pelosi because she speaks, with authority, on issues of which she has (but should not!) grave ignorance, such as claiming that Natural Gas is not a fossil fuel.

She's also a gun-grabber, which always concerns me. I expect people to fall into a wide range of positions on gun control, but her's is a tad Orwellian for me.

Pelosi scores 34% by US Chamber of Commerce on business policy. That's a bit extream.

Voted NO on requiring photo ID for voting in federal elections.
Voted NO on prohibiting lawsuits about obesity against food providers.
Voted NO on limiting attorney's fees in class action lawsuits.
Voted NO on restricting frivolous lawsuits.
Voted NO on building a fence along the Mexican border.
Voted NO on preventing tipping off Mexicans about Minuteman Project.
Rated 0% by FAIR (http://www.ontheissues.org/Note-FAIR.asp), indicating a voting record loosening immigration.
Voted NO on permanently eliminating the marriage penalty.

I wonder if she would vote "NO" prohibiting lawsuits about ignorance against liberal politicians?

And how far down the food chain is she to be President?

Maybe she needs to retake third grade?

I agree. Hitler had the same policy on gun ownership. She's obviously nowhere near as smart as Hitler was but it is scary. Registration is the first step to confiscation.
