my new computer!!! I just got back from Best Buy. Went through the absolute hell that is Best Buy's service just to get it. Anyways, its an Asus 1000 HEB. I went with the netbook instead of a full-size laptop. $350 got me a 10 inch screen, 160gig hdd, 6 cell battery (7 hours battery life), built in webcam. It's a little on the small side, but I wanted the really good battery life and small size so I can take it with me out to the field. I looked around and it looked like Asus was way ahead of anyone else in netbooks. I'm pretty impressed so far. I also love not having to use vista. This came with XP SP3. :D

Not being a wise apple, but how is it using one that small? I have been thinking of getting one but I am on the fence with one that small.

very nice.

The keyboard at that size is pure hell for me. One example is the shift is like 1/3 the size and it messes with your head!

It's actually not bad at all. Only typing problems I have had is as Kaje pointed out. The right shift key is smaller than normal. Once I learned where it was, it's actually been really easy. The only other annoyance has been the right/left click buttons for the touchpad. They are great buttons and placed well, but they are surprisingly tough to push down. I read that from everyone else's reviews and mine is no different. Obviously a USB mouse solves this easily.
The touchpad is extremely good, which was partly what convinced me that this was definitely the best netbook for the money. This thing just has a good solid feel. It doesn't feel flimsy like the Dell and it's much better equiped than a comparable HP. The biggest difference maker by far is the 6 cell battery. All the other netbooks around this price range have the 3 cell battery, which gives you around 3 hours battery. This one is supposed to be 7 hours. Makes a big difference for me because I fly from Maryland to Oklahoma pretty often. Its nice to know that it's not going to die on me 2/3rds into the flight. :)
I've done my own little modifications here and there that help with the screen size. No toolbars on firefox, no status bar. I have the windows taskbar set to autohide as well, so it adds that much more usable screen space. From what I've seen, nearly everyone who buys the Asus 1000HEB buys the 2gig ram stick to upgrade from the 1gig installed. I think I'll follow suit, just to make sure it's running at the best it can.
Overall, it's lightweight, feels very durable. Stays cool and quiet when running. It can occasionally get a little bogged down with too many programs running, but I think the ram upgrade will help a little with that. For $350, this thing is a huge bargain. Especially since I bought it in Delaware. (no sales tax) :D:cool:

Good review...I've been seriously considering a Lenovo Ideapad S10, I saw one for about $350 the other day.

Oh I forgot. I tried out the Asus 900 and I would not recommend it. It's 8.9" and it's painfully small. I think 10" is the smallest you can go without driving yourself nuts with the keyboard. My 1000HEB has around a 90% full-size keyboard. The 900 series I played with at Best Buy felt like it was around 70-80%. It was way too small.

My toshiba crashed and that's the computer my work replaced it with. Mine doesn't have wifi or a cd rom. The right shift key is in a very weird location. Other than that it's not a bad little computer. Very small though.

Excellent choice, OSUCherokee. Only upgrade I would do is drop in a 2 GB RAM stick which is really easy to do and makes it Win7 ready. I own a different version of that EEE, the 1000HE with a 2 GB stick of Corsair RAM. The video processor is lacking, but with some tweaks and possibly VLC, you can watch videos. I did watch Wall-e through iTunes and it was not the best, but watchable. The keyboard is nice and I agree that going with something smaller would be a pain. The only thing that is as good or better is the Samsung (NC-10 I think, not sure) that is $75 to $150 more and the MSI Wind doesn't have the feature of this.
@snuffy, if it is a secondary computer or you don't spend all day on it, it will do fine, but if this is your primary computer, you'll definitely want a wireless mouse and change the 1 GB stick of RAM to 2 GB. I use it for travelling and and late night web browsing and some light gaming. They do make SSD (Solid State Drive) versions but you're better off looking for a cheaper model and buying an aftermarket SSD.
But, nice choice OSUCherokee. Does it have bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n? Mine does.

No, it's technically the 1000he, but Best Buy has it labeled as an HEB. The HEB is like yours and has bluetooth and wireless N. Considering that the only place to get the REAL HEB is Amazon/internet, it's $379 plus I would have to pay tax, all total it would cost around $415 or so compare to buying the HE in Delaware for $350 and no tax. I just didn't feel that it was worth it to pay roughly $65 more for Bluetooth and a wireless letter that I don't use yet. That was my reasoning for it. I love it so far. I took it to drill with me today. It's funny because I got some interesting reactions. At first people were commenting on how I should have got a bigger laptop. After I explained how cheap it was and they saw how awesomely portable it is, they all changed their mind. It's a great little machine and the battery is amazing.
I am going to get the ram. I just didn't want to buy it at Best Buy. I'll get it cheaper online. It does need it. I edit a lot of photos and it struggles every now and then while running photoshop. It runs videos just fine on mine though. I have my entire collection of Top Gear on here and it runs those episodes just fine. The speakers are very good.

I believe you can only a 2 GB stick in there, not a 3 or 4.
