View Full Version : Why is HireOSUGrads.com worthless?

Every time I have gone on there, most of the sites on there are Link to OrangePower's Career Website (example) and it's a mess codewise, as anytime I stay on there for more than 15 minutes at a time, I find some new way to crash the page. The whole point of the site is to get you ahead of other candidates by applying through that site so the company looks at those candidates first. I get so mad when I click on jobs I qualify for, looking for a decent IT job, and line cook, lumber jack, ranch hand, and hotel maid show up. It is ridiculous and I wish whoever the University is paying would hold their feet to the fire and make them fix the site and I wish Hire would put some decent jobs on there for once. The staff there and some career services people act like it's the second coming and all you have to do is go to the site and you will magically get a job and leprechauns will show up at your door and start filling your bath tub with gold while unicorns promise to poop rainbows and give you rides to your glorious job where you make $250,000/year and you get 120 days paid leave and they serve an all you can eat buffet of kobe beef and lobster while you can drink the best wine/liquor/beer in the world. Yes, I would change my tune if I had a job, but I don't. /end rant

Does anyone on here actually have a job they got through that site?

I did the application process through the site. However, I first met with the company at the Career Fair. I think one of the keys is to limit the searches to OSU's companies, or something like that. If you search the entire network you get a lot of noise. Don't remember how exactly they worded it, but it was something weird like that.

I'm in the same boat, and I agree that hireosugrads is awful. Monster and HotJobs don't seem to be much better in regards to job searches though, as they always suggest jobs that would like you to have 10 years experience and other ridiculous items for a recent college graduate. Before anybody asks, yes I have gone through and double checked my job search agents to make sure that the search options are looking for closely related qualifications.

Honestly guys, job search sites all suck. They are great for finding out who's hiring, what positions, etc. but it's a terrible way to land a job (and an awful way to get applicants). Grab 48 Days to the Work You Love and learn a better way to go about finding a job than looking there.

I was going to start a new thread, but it looks like somebody beat me to it. IMO not only is HireOSUgrads awful, but the Career Services people at OSU cant do much of anything. I would love to hear one success story. Please someone tell me why this isnt a huge waste of money and time. Give me one success story. I dare you.

As stated before, my current position was through the OSU Career Services office. But I met with the company face-to-face at a career fair (done by the Career Services office) and through the company's events promoted through the Career Services office.

You're right though, they can't do much of anything. Only you can. They simply bring people together, and provide resources. Same goes for any job website or career placement office. You need to take matters into your own hands, and get after it. Nobody will land a job for you. If you're just hoping to drop applications and land a gig, you'll fail. Jobs are scarce, applicants are plentiful. Do something different. 48 Days to the Work You Love get it, read it, do it.

Yeah, I was pissy most of the day yesterday. And the funny thing is I don’t know if I would have wanted the internship or not. I've never had a problem getting a job, but I guess it was the fact that they were hindering me more than anything. Anyway, rant over. I'm really glad I didn’t post the original message. I would have felt pretty bad.

So I assume this is a book? I'll check it out this weekend. I appreciate the experienced advice. Thanks guys.

I didn't mind it so much when I was a student, because I wasn't expecting much out of it to begin with. However, I've browsed it a few times since then when I've had openings to fill and I thought it was pretty bad.

i had a success story from 2005....... Dont know if that counts or not. I sucked it up and interviewed my ass off for a couple of months. I interviewed with about 30 different companies.

Here was my motto....Don't restrict yourself by being close minded on your career path. It is highly likely that each company has a department that you are interested in and it is up to you to make the decisions to get you there. Gather all of your other experiences and try to be diversified. Be confident and let them understand your intentions for the position. If you are an engineer and there is a sales position available. Let the interviewer know that you like the company and are wanting to get experience in sales so that you can be a better engineer for their firm.

Well thought out interviews don't necessarily mean that you are only focused on the position they offer you.

I ended up with around 20 offers from companies that ranged from clothing sales to engineering, and i had a agribusiness degree.....

Try not to get caught up in the negatives of the economy and employment situation. The companies that interview at OSU are looking there because of the people that OSU produce. Sell yourself more than your career and you might have more luck.
