Palm is reporting Apple to the USB Implementers Forum.
Evidently, Palm is rather ticked off having to update the Pre's webOS operating system
in order for it sync within Apple iTunes again (story). In fact, Palm has reported "another member" to the USB Implementers Forum on behalf of consumers, claiming an "improper use of the Vendor ID number." Of course, we know whom they're referring to: Apple.
"Palm believes that openness and interoperability offer better experiences for users by allowing them the freedom to use the content they own without interference across devices and services," the company said.
Back in July, Apple stated that iTunes 8.2.1 would disable devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre. "As we’ve said before, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with unsupported digital media players," Apple said.
Taking the comment as a challenge, Palm proved who's boss. "Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right–you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1)."
Of course, the fight doesn't end here. Expect the next version of iTunes to lock Palm's Pre out of the service once again. Yeah, we love a good cat fight.
What's the deal with that? I will never understand Apple's fight to stop letting other companies to compete with them. Big deal if somebody wants to use their Pre to sync with iTunes. Those users are gracious enough to support iTunes but moves like this can force users to find a different music library in which to sync with.
