Default One game away from number 1?

I think that is a very possible scenario. If we beat Texas and Alabama has a weak game, win or lose against Tennessee, then we are the logical choice.

I am just assuming Ohio State will beat the Kitty Cats from Mt. Nit.

Now, do I thnk we are really number one? If we beat Texas we sure will be up there. If forced to name the best team in the country right now I would reluctantly say USC.

College Football News thinks so...

6. Oklahoma State (7-0)
W, Baylor 34-6
next game: at Texas
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … this might be the No. 3 team in the nation at the moment. The Cowboys have been nearly perfect on offense and the defense is jelling at just the right time. Beat Texas, go to No. 1. It's that simple.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because .. it sort of can't be. It's an unbeaten BCS conference team that hasn't shown any real flaws. If Oklahoma had the same résumé, it would probably be ranked No. 1.

For some reason reading that is just surreal to me. My dad has been taking me to games since I was two (I'm now an Alum) and I remember when the highlight of my week was driving to Stillwater to sit a rusty stadium that was half-full of people wearing denim jackets and yellow ponchos, most of whom stuck around just long enough to see if David Thompson got over 100 yards.

This is a huge gripe of mine about college football and why I've been leaning towards the pro game the past few years. It says "Oklahoma would probably be #1 with the same resume." However I"ve really been sucked back in this year due to our success so far this year. In the NFL its purely based on Wins and losses just how I think it should be. But anyway, I just wish we had a much fairer way of determining the best team in college football. And also for the people who complain about the computers determining who is the best. I actually think the computer is legit. There is absolutely no bias programmed into the computers. And I think they look more @ S0S and W-L record as opposed to who looks the prettiest....

Who is the big gooner fan from Hugo OK who has a computer program in the BCS? You don't think he doesn't have some anti-oSu bias programmed into his BCS program?

It's not biased toward OU. It simply takes into account pre-season rankings which always favor OU, Texas, and the perennial powers. The problem with this is that the reason why they wait so long to release BCS rankings is to eliminate bias from the pre-season. The BCS committee simply needs to make him remove that portion from his formula.

Im pretty sure it does not take in preseason rankings, however if you start at the top during the preseason it takes an effort to take you down.

We will definitely be #1 in the computers if we beat Texas. In the AP we will probably be #2/3, which will make us #1 in the BCS and thats ALL that matters! We control our own destiny.

GO POKES!

I don't care about rankings, I don't care if we end up #2 or #3 or #4. All I want is for us to beat Texas.

GO POKES! BEAT TEXAS!

IMO OSU would jump to around #3. We would stay the same and UT would fall around #5. They should be ranked above us but they would have lost at home to a #5-10 school whereas we lost on a neutral field to a #1-5 team.

If the scenario played out this way, then it would prove that OSU is better than Texas and Texas is better than OU. I would hope that the polls would reflect that rather than putting Texas behind OU after they beat them by 10 two weeks ago. That's what drives me nuts about college football.
Also, if after this weekend, we are able to say that we are 8-0 and have beaten the #3 and #1 ranked teams on the road, then who could show a better resume' than that?
At this point, I just want the win. The rest will take care of itself. GO POKES!!

The bcs is not much of a computer determining the order of the teams. What's the biggest factor that determines the bcs ranking? The coaches poll! The computer system is filled with bias. There is no way ou or usc should be ranked above us. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying we are better than either of those two teams. But tech and osu should be ahead of both one loss teams since they are undefeated from a major conf. So why are we not ranked ahead? Because coahces and not computers, say we are not the real deal. USC's schedule to this point, can't be much stronger than ours. They had one key win. Sad to say though, a lot of time bias proves to be true.

I don't think we can expect to top out any higher than #3 this week unless it is a "perfect storm" weekend where Tech, UO, Penn and Bamma all take it on the chin (of course, this obviously counts on Texas getting a home field spanking.)

I'm not saying that's where we should top out.... just being realistic about the "human factor."

If we win and Penn St. wins they will be #1.

I honeslty mean this, I don't want to be #1, I want to be #2 in the BCS.

At least until the Championship. I think there's a huge difference in the perception and pressure between the 2 and I like the underdog role.

Then if if worked out, I'll look for #1 next year and the added pressure.

But yes, I just want to be Texas at this point without worrying about the rest.
