I'm trying to arrange a little weekend trip for my son to Dallas, and he's requested a stay in a "luxury" hotel. He mentioned the Four Seasons, but it's a little expensive for me. Any suggestions for a "really nice" hotel that's relatively affordable in the Dallas area?

    Thanks
    Big Dave

I don't know a specific Dallas hotel but if I was just trying to get a luxury hotel with no other criteria I would just go on hotels.com, travelocity, tripadvisor or one of those sites and put in 4/5 star only. Usually one or two will be running a special and will be cheaper than the rest. Just read the reviews and make sure it actually is 4/5 star.

Crescent is probably nicest in town.
    W is very nice.
The Mansion is nice and has an awesome bar but is a little dated and costs as much as the rest.
The Adolphus is in the heart of downtown and has a luxury feel but has good deals.
The Zsa Zsa is fru fru and maybe the easiest luxury hotel to get coke.

How old is the boy, what is he comparing luxury to, what's on the agenda.

If he is young and it doesn't have to be Dallas proper look at The Gaylord Texan. Great pool, proper steakhouse, sports bar that shows the rangers on a eleventy billion foot screen and recliner chairs. Cool place.....can get very nice rooms or rooms along the lines of the high end chain.

He's 25, but hasn't been out much. I've tried smacking him a bit, but he's getting older and bigger, and I'm, well, doing the same, but by "older", I mean "geriatric", and by "bigger", I mean "fatter". Seriously, what he's seen of luxury hotels, he's seen on TV. My idea of luxury is Candlewood Suites, so I'm not much help.

I appreciate the suggestions, and I'll check them out.

When I was interviewing in Dallas and the law firms would put me up in fancy downtown hotels, I grew to like the Adolphus. If you're looking for more of an entertainment-type theme hotel, I'd second Donny's suggestion of the Gaylord Texan, if you can get past the name (on a couple of different levels).

If you stay at Zsa Zsa I'd be interested in hearing your experience. The guy who owns it is from OKC, we went to the same high school.

Just stayed at the new Omni downtown and it was really nice. They had a special on their website for $119. Regular rate is around $200 I think.

I used to live in Dallas and stayed in most of the hotels that could be considered luxury. The Four Seasons in Irving is nice, but it's close to nothing. The Mansion is consistently rated as one of the best in the US, but it's an "old money" crowd. The Cresent and Za Za are located in the Uptown area which is a great area for a 25 year old. The W Hotel in Victory Park would be another option, but I haven't stayed there. I'd say go with Za Za and hit up some of the bars/restaurants (walking distance) around Uptown. You can sometimes score decent deals on hotels.com or orbitz.

The Adolphus is old, charming, and very neat. It was build by Adolph Busch. Really cheap deals appear all the time on hotels.com. I got a really good deal at the Fairmont downtown also. It is right near uptown and the arts district. The really fancy places like the W, Crescent, Zsa Zsa, don't give many major discounts. You're looking at $200 plus pretty must any time. My personal favorite is the Doubletree at Campbell Center. It's less than $100 a night most of the time and is located right on the North-Central expressway. You are close to downtown, uptown, greenville, Northpark, etc.
