STILLWATER — After one quarter of the Boise State-Oklahoma State game, there was a fleeting memory of former Cowboy quarterback Alex Cate.
During the first half of the 2009 Colorado game — in the first and only start of his college career — Cate was 0-of-9 passing with an interception. He watched the rest of the game from the sideline. In Brandon Weeden’s first significant action, he came out of the bullpen to save OSU that night.
Cate’s tough half was recalled because of Taylor Cornelius’ 1-of-5, 9-yard first quarter on Saturday.
All summer, there were frequently asked questions: What would happen if Cornelius, OSU’s inexperienced senior QB, were to falter during the first half of the Boise State contest? How might Cowboy coach Mike Gundy and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich respond?
