Wonder what impact this will have for us...

For Rupert Murdoch, creating a national cable sports network in the United States to compete with ESPN has been his white whale — a tantalizing television opportunity but one of the few fields that his media empire has not conquered.

But two decades after shaking up the sports broadcasting world for the first time by acquiring N.F.L. rights, Murdoch has plans to challenge ESPN head on and claim some of the lucrative revenue that the sports media giant has had largely to itself for more than three decades.

On Tuesday, Fox will announce its intention to start Fox Sports 1, an all-sports network, in August.

The channel will carry Nascar races, Major League Baseball games, college basketball and football, soccer and U.F.C. fights.

I kind of hope that it does work. I'd like to see more competition for ESPN and more quality sports coverage wouldn't be a bad thing either, at least not in my opinion.

Nothing but good thing for college sports. Bidding wars for TV rights looks like where this is headed.

I don't know if it is still the plan, but originally this was to replace Speed channel. So if you have Speed, you'll have the new Fox Sports 1.

Sweet. As long as it's better than Speed.

C-SPAN is sometimes better than Speed.

This can only be good. I'm sick of ESPN.

That is awesome that they will start to carry College Hoops!! Gus Johnson works for Fox and the only college hoops you can hear him on now is the Big 10 Network and Gus is one of the best IMO.

And hopefully they make it as readily available as ESPN, IE not having to pay for an extra package that has Speed in it.

I am ALL in on this by the way. ESPN seems to have made some people (sports media) upset over the years, so they should have some good talent to fill out a bunch of positions. Hope it works out!

If Gus Johnson sticks with hoops--he's being pushed as the voice of US soccer for the next two World Cup cycles.

If he is chosen honestly it will make me watch more US Soccer matches. He is one of my favorites. He would definitely add a level of excitement to the games for the average fan.

He's already called a couple of games for Fox Soccer (including Manchester United at Real Madrid a few weeks ago, and a Bayern Munich game soon thereafter). He's no longer employed by CBS, so we won't see him at the NCAA tournament this year.

Yeah, I knew he was out at CBS that is why I'm hoping he can do some college hoops for Fox if that happens and he is available to do so.

So could they be in love with the Big 12 to offset the ESECPN love fest.

This has been in the works for a while, that's why you've seen them buying up as much content as they can. FOX has the content to compete with ESPN, unlike NBC and CBS. Rumor is they'll have B1G games in a couple of years when their contract is up with ESPN, so FOX will have content from the BIG 12, PAC 12 and B1G... Their gamble with UFC is going to payoff big time with these new networks as well.

I thought Speed was pretty good..... it was pretty exciting to watch how Sandra Bullock kept that bus over 50 MPH. Speed 2 was terrible though.... the one where they are on the boat.

I don't know how connected the foxsports.com is to this, if at all. I hope not at all because foxsports.com stinks.

C-SPAN would definitely be better than Speed, if it could only be as entertaining as watching the British parliament.

One would hope that their website would get a major facelift if they really wanted to compete with espn. The website is one of their few products that really is lightyears ahead of their competition.
