Quarterback search goes on for Cowboys

    By Nick Snow
    Stillwater NewsPress
STILLWATER, Okla. — It’s been a long, slow process, but Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy said he is getting closer to naming a starting quarterback.

“I think there’s separation with guys, and then some other ones may make some ground up,” Gundy said. “We would still like to name a starting quarterback by the end of spring ball. We were hoping to do it by the end of this week, but we want to make sure it’s the right guy and for the right reasons. We would like to be able to name a starting quarterback after spring.”

When I read in between the lines it looks like Lunt is the man.

I'm overly ready for this spring game next Saturday, because from the looks of things Wes Lunt is the real deal, and for him to even be in competition with the other two says something about his game IMHO... That being said it all comes down to who performs best when the games on the line.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Lunt named the starter. I want the best in there, and neither Walsh or chelf impress me much. Chelf does have the cojones and walsh throws too awakrd to be taken seriously.

I have a sneaky feeling lunt is the real deal and will lead us to a big 12 championship as a true freshman.

Careful talking about Walsh's throwing motion on here. I got an ear full for saying the same thing a few months back lol. Lunt is apparently grasping the offense quickly and he already had the arm. Won't suprise me if Gundy & Co don't name a starter after the spring game unless Lunt really shines. I've been saying 1-Chelf, 2-Walsh and RS Lunt, but if they are really that close I'm thinking 1-Lunt, 2-Chelf and JW transfer IMO. Hate to lose JW, but dont see him hanging around in backup role at OSU. I also dont want to go back to zone read style offense either and apparently that was the primary plays called for him in last scrimmage. He broke some good yardage, but I'd rather sling it 50 times a game and just dont think JW's "T-Mac" throwing motion can handle it.

I have been thinking Walsh will land it but if they don't name a starter by the end of spring and Lunt appears to have a decent showing at the spring game that delay could be the coaches wanting to see what Lunt does over the summer. If he hadn't had a shot to start I would think they would have said something by now. This gets more and more interesting as days pass.

This statement sounds like they want to name Lunt as the man but want to be absolutely sure before they do it.

Really? I read it as "Every time we think one of the QB's is pulling away, the other's make that ground up and close the gap."

Point is, people are going to draw whatever conclusion they want to see from these quotes.

It could be selective reporting, but one name seems to be continually mentioned more than others.

Remember folks....Lunt was recruited by Monken. JW Walsh was recruited by Holgersen.

That should tell you something right there. Should be a close battle but Lunt seems to be a viable option at this point

That both were recruited to run this type of offense?

Alright let's say for one second that lunt wins. What do you do with J.W. He is just to good to leave on the sideline his whole college career.

Sure, they were both recruited to OSU. But Monken would be our current OC where as Holgersen isn't even here anymore. Go ahead and try to tell me that has 0% impact on how Monken views the QB situation.

I agree with the comment above that people are going to decipher coach gundys comments in their own way. IMO I think we are running the same offense as last year and Lunt is grasping the mental aspect faster than they expected and don't want to make the wrong decision by red shirting Lunt, IF he has what it takes to be our starter or is that close to being our starter.

I agree and if they don't name a starter this week, I really believe they want to wait and see how Lunt develops over the summer. If you've seen him play you know that he is way above the others as far as passing tools go, he is impressive and I think it's only a matter of time before he develops into what we want him to be.

I don't believe like some that he will lead us to a league title next year, but I do believe if he develops as I think he's capable of he certainly has the chance to do so in time, and no offense intended but I don't think the others do. Lunt may as well make his mistakes now, I would be delighted with 8 wins and really happy with any more. By the end of this year he could be really coming on, so long as his confidence is not shaken in the bright lights.

Mike Gundy knew when Josh Fields was ready to shine as a true freshman and he will know when Wes Lunt is ready too.

Just my opinion, could be wrong often am, but I have predicted from the start that he has more than a legitimate chance. If not they would not have have asked him to come in early. He definitely gives us the best chance to reload in the same offensive mode, the other two do not, and I think in time he will be exactly what we are looking for.

I dont get the Walsh mechanic 'thing'. He threw for 3,000+ his senior year. I think the average fan saw the Depth Chart when his arm was hurting and that has turned into threads of mechanical issues. Question?
Do you think the likes of Holgerson, Heupel, Miles, Harbaugh would have offered him if he couldn't make all the throws.
The kid can throw the rock don't discredit his passing ability because he get first downs with his legs. Remember he is only on his 12th collegiate practice, I'm guessing last year Weeden and Chelf got most or all the reps in practice.

I've read that he is simply too good of an athlete to leave out all together. Given that the spread offenses struggle in red zone opportunities, I'm guessing maybe in red zone opportunities.

Devil's Advocate here: Miles apparently has recruited several qb's who couldn't 'throw the rock,' based on what I saw last season.
