Stupid about AGW!!

You can actually filed a separate withholding form for state taxes if you want. Almost any payroll system allows that for the very reason you describe. Talk to your HR/payroll department.
My wife did this in Jan 2018 with her HR Dept as we knew taxes were undergoing overhaul and she had them withhold more

Just finished taxes..Fed refund was up $1499 vs 2017 and well the state of OK is getting a check from me for almost $1k ..damn state tax owed has increased for 4 consecutive years now

Im thinking the people complaining didn't actually pay attention to what was happening with taxes

I filed last week. Increased AGI phase out on child tax credits offset my loss of exemptions. Ended up with an unexpected refund.

I've only gotten to the point of inputting my income into the software and it says I am already getting a refund (both fed and state). No deductions input yet.

Nothing abnormal yet. Probably should change my withholdings. I like to be close to a net of zero.
I'm worried if I change my withholdings to bring down my federal return then I'll end up owing even MORE to the state. lol.
When I lived in Oklahoma I ALWAYS got a small Federal refund and ALWAYS owed Oklahoma. Every damn year no matter what I tweaked.

I don't know who this guy is but he sounds like a complete idiot... (I read through some his exchanges).... he does not seem to be coherent, or at least has no idea what he's talking about.

best I can tell, he's either confused because of the lower withholding amount, or is wondering why his refund is less.
My guess is all of the above. Most people don't even understand the difference between marginal and effective tax rates. I'm not saying it's impossible that someone is getting screwed on this deal, just that the vast majority of people have no clue how taxes work.

agreed... but Townie keeps throwing his dirty underwear at us anyway.... his constant baiting of the board is absolutely ridiculous, unnecessarily adversarial and intentionally vulcanizing.

Many, okay most, of his posts are nonsensical, but this place needs more differing opinions. A whole lotta group think around here.

Lol, quote from the link.

'Did taxes for years we would pay more and get a refund at the end of the year to help pay debt . First time in 30 years We had to pay more in Federal
Taxes. I’m disgusted'

Great financial planning there bud. Turns out there are things called banks where you can deposit short-term funds AND get paid interest.
