OKLAHOMA CITY — The Cowboys were still a man short when they took to the floor at John Marshall High School on Sunday.

There were 12 Oklahoma State players practicing in front of the few hundred who came out to watch. The missing man was Michael Weathers, who was suspended indefinitely in September following a grand larceny charge. Weathers’ original court date was Oct. 1, but after a brief hearing his next date was set for Nov. 5, a day after OSU’s season-opening exhibition against Ouachita Baptist.

OSU coach Mike Boynton spoke on the topic following the team’s practice.

“He’s been given some things he has to do on the legal side, and once he’s done with those things, then we can deal with him as it relates to our team,” Boynton said.

Weathers, a redshirt sophomore who transferred from Miami (Ohio), is apparently staying in shape should the opportunity arise for him to rejoin the team.

“Part of my job is to help kids when they go through tough times,” Boynton said. “I haven’t in any way abandoned him. Still love him. Still care for him. Still try to help him through the academic side and make sure, psychologically, this isn’t something that makes him give up on himself.

“He’s got a lot of growing to do. Hopefully this is a situation that he can learn and grow from. I think if he does that, long term, for himself, he’ll be fine. What it looks like for our team right now, I’d be hesitant to say.

“I don’t know, but as he continues to deal with those things, he’ll give himself more of a chance to maybe have an opportunity to come back at some point.”

Much like Boynton said he hasn’t abandoned Weathers, Lindy Waters said the team hasn’t either.

“He’s still one of ours,” Waters said. “He’s our brother. We see him every day. We still hang out with him. Nothing is different but once we get on the court, we only have 12 guys. That’s all we can use at the moment.”
