When it was first announced last week at GamesCom in Germany, the PlayStation 3 Slim was given a September 1 release date. That appears to have fallen by the wayside, though, with both brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers already offering the $299 120GB console.

The PS3 Slim: Already at a retailer near you.

Calls to several San Francisco Bay Area retailers found that not only is the PS3 currently on sale, but it's often sold out. Employees at several GameStop locations said that they had received "extremely limited stock" of the console on Tuesday, all of which were instantly scooped up by customers who had reserved a unit.

"I think Sony's probably trying to keep supply tight, so it will be in high demand like the Wii and the PS3 were at launch," one GameStop employee told GameSpot. "We had less than a week's warning it was coming. We had reserves only open for two to three days, and the shipment only had 12 to 13 consoles. We don't know when we'll be getting our next batch."

Meanwhile, GameStop's online store and Amazon.com are already listing the PS3 slim as shipping within 24 hours. Meanwhile, Best Buy's online store says the console is already back-ordered one to two weeks and not available for store pickup. However, calls to San Francisco-area Best Buy locations found that the PS3 Slim is currently both on sale and in stock. "We've got about a dozen on the store floor right now, enough to hold one if you'd like," said an employee.

For its part, Sony says that the launch date announced at GamesCom was more of a guideline for would-be purchasers. "September 1 isn't an official street date," a rep told GameSpot. "We expect most retailers to have 120GB PS3s by then."

Chalk this up to Capt. Obvious (not you, Cherokee). They should have done this a long time ago. I am going to put this on my Christmas list, for sure.

I read something about them updating the HDMI/audio chip? I am pretty well sold on this because I don't need backwards compatibility and I don't care about the matte finish or that there are buttons and not touch buttons.

ohh I can't bring myself to give up my 80GB version that I have the Metal gear solid bundle...backward compat with 90% of PS2 games and 100% of PS1 games and it has the 4 USB slots upfront instead of 2 , a Universal card reader, the hard drive is removable by the user and you can replace it if needed...too many options to give up to get the slim.

I have heard that there are some just sitting on the shelves at a Best Buy here in Fort Worth. /shrug
Funny he bolded the two lines that talked about it being sold out but didn't bold the line about the 12 sitting on the shelf in san francisco.

I hear a lot of people going to buy the slim. Most of them already have a PS3 though. Probably be a lot of cheap used PS3's out there in the near future. That gets me excited.

That's a good point. I do plan on buying a PS3 in the future so more used ones on the market for cheap could be a good thing.

You might like this...

John Koller said:
"Yes, you can. It does not void your warranty. In fact, we encourage it," Koller told us. He explained that the drive is now located on the front of the system, not the side, and changing out your hard drive will still be easy. "It's a two-screw process," he explained.
Don't worry about being stuck with "just" an 80GB hard drive. The ability to install your own hard drive is still there, and Koller seemed enthusiastic about people modifying their systems in this way.

Well... that was the topic of the thread. Makes sense right? ;)

Hard drives are still removable and upgradable. The slim has a faster processor. The unit runs on 37 or so percent less electricity and is even quieter.

Holy crap... ladies and gentlemen, Sony officially now has a sense of humor. :D

In their new commercial for the PS3 Slim, Sony has made fun of itself with all the rumors and speculation about price drops and new consoles. Check out the new ad.
