They may have knocked but I suspect they didn't waste much time busting in. What would you do if someone busted in your house in the middle of the night?

Apparently they wasted enough time for a neighbor to come out and ask what all of the racket was about, and then was asked to go back inside their apartment before the entry started. That doesn’t sound lightning fast to me. As I’ve said before, that was probably the biggest problem here. They waited too long to bust in and allowed someone to grab their firearm and be in a position to fire. An actual NKW possibly results in no shots fired.
