Been putting this list together to keep track of what the Pokes have coming in and what's going out. Figured I would share it... especially because I would like to see our Pokes compete for national titles over the next 5 years.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet..._fCbzhyAj1iQtMKHrsTJPt6BJQfHR86hpU1c5/pubhtml

Next year poses some interesting challenges with the potential of Olympic redshirts, and I am going to work under the assumption that Daton Fix is going to take his.

So for 2019-2020, this is what I think the lineup will look like.

125: Nick Piccinnini
133: Kaid Brock
141: Kaden Gfeller
149: Boo Lewellen
157: Brevin Balmaceda / Dan Manibog
165: Andrew Shommers
174: Joe Smith
184: Anthony Montalvo / Bear Hughes
197: Dakota Geer
HWT: Tony Andrade (assuming a commitment here from the NEO standout.)

Big question marks with new faces in some of these weight classes... but Brevin and Anthony are great young wrestlers that should make an immediate impact for us. Would absolutely love to see this group get us #35.

2020-2021:
125: Trevor Mastrogiovanni / Jakason Burks
133: Daton Fix
141: Kaden Gfeller
149: Boo Lewellen (assuming medical redshirt)
157: Brevin Balmaceda / Dan Manibog
165: Brevin Balmaceda / Dan Manibog
174: Travis Wittlake / Dustin Plott
184: Anthony Montalvo / Bear Hughes
197: Dakota Geer
HWT: Tony Andrade / Konner Doucet

2021-2022:
125: Trevor Mastrogiovanni / Jakason Burks
133: Daton Fix
141: Kaden Gfeller
149: Reece Witcraft
157: Brevin Balmaceda / Dan Manibog
165: Brevin Balmaceda / Dan Manibog
174: Travis Wittlake / Dustin Plott
184: Anthony Montalvo / Bear Hughes
197: AJ Ferrari (hopefully)
HWT: Tony Andrade / Konner Doucet

We should win some national titles with these. Would love to get to 40 with these classes John Smith has put together... then he can retire and hand the reins over to one of the young coaches (I'm kinda hoping for Ringer to take over) and keep this dynasty rolling.

So I was looking at this a little bit deeper to account for power programs with recruits from in-state / out-of-state.

OSU is the only power program with more in-state guys than out-of-state guys.

OSU (In-State: 19) (Out-of-State: 18)
Penn State (In-State: 16) (Out-of-State: 19)
Iowa (In-State: 15) (Out-of-State: 21)
Ohio State (In-State: 14) (Out-of-State: 20)
Michigan (In-State: 15) (Out-of-State: 18)
Cornell (In-State: 10) (Out-of-State: 28)

Then when you dig that out... the disparity in starters is even more stark...

OSU... In-State Starters: 7
Penn State... In-State Starters: 3
Ohio State... In-State Starters: 2
Iowa... In-State Starters: 2
Michigan... In-State Starters: 6
Cornell... In-State Starters: 4

Starters at out-of-state schools... where are they from?

Pennsylvania: 8
New York: 2
Ohio: 3
New Jersey: 3
Minnesota: 4
Arizona: 1
Missouri: 1
Kansas: 1
Texas: 1
California: 1
Indiana: 2
Florida: 2
Massachusetts: 1
Alabama: 1

So there could be a couple of things at play here... I guess here are 3 conclusions I come to based on this fairly limited data...

1) Oklahoma State and Iowa do a decent job keeping high level recruits from going off somewhere else. There isn't a single starter at another high level program from Oklahoma or Iowa. Hell, I didn't see any guys from Oklahoma or Iowa on any of these other rosters. You could look at this as the glass being empty and say that Oklahoma and Iowa aren't producing high level guys, and that may be true for Iowa, but it's certainly not for OSU since Wyatt Sheets is the only OSU starter from Oklahoma not ranked in the top 15.

2) Pennsylvania is still producing the most top level recruits... but the best team in PA isn't exactly living and dying by getting PA guys in their room. They go get the best guys from everywhere... as do most of these teams.

3) I chose the top 6, but Missouri is right outside of this and could be included... and most of their top level guys are either from Kansas City or Columbia. I truly do not understand how we haven't really been able to capitalize on the popularity of the sport in Missouri to get more of these top level guys. I know Jaydin Eierman's dad is the one coaching most of them and they push Mizzou hard... but one of Ohio State's best wrestlers at 157 lbs is from KC. Iowa isn't getting them either... so IDK.

So upon reflection I think the lineup next year will look like this...

No Olympic Redshirts:
125: Nick Piccinnini
133: Daton Fix
141: Kaid Brock / Kaden Gfeller
149: Boo Lewallen / Kaden Gfeller
157: Wyatt Sheets / Brevin Balmeceda / Dan Manibog
165: Joe Smith
174: Travis Wittlake
184: Anthony Montalvo
197: Dakota Geer
HWT: Cornelius Putnam / Potential grad transfer

Olympic Redshirts:
125: Nick Piccinnini
133: Kaid Brock
141: Kaden Gfeller
149: Boo Lewallen
157: Wyatt Sheets / Brevin Balmeceda / Dan Manibog
165: Brevin Balmeceda / Dan Manibog
174: Joe Smith
184: Anthony Montalvo
197: Dakota Geer
HWT: Cornelius

Now... bear in mind... we could have some other guys qualify for an Olympic redshirt if we have anybody that finishes top 3 at NCAAs AND top 2 at U23 World Team Trials. Maybe Kaden Gfeller could do this... maybe Balmaceda / Manibog / Reece Witcraft could be a junior world's medalist... I don't know... but that will throw an interesting wrinkle in next year's lineup if Fix and Wittlake decide to take Olympic redshirts.

Can he take an OLY RS during an non-Olympic year?
He's a senior in high school this season. Since he's a junior world champ, he already is qualified for an Olympic Redshirt for the 19-20 season.

I'm not sure if he'll bulk or if he'll maintain his current weight to wrestle at 220 in international competition like Kyle Snyder did... but I think the goal of him taking at least one redshirt will be to create less overlap between him and Gable Stevenson. If he takes two redshirts simultaneously, he'll be a freshman in Gable's senior year.

Got it. I thought he was a freshman for Oh St this year.

That leads me to this... We really need to get AJ Ferrari in this 2020 class. That would make us extremely solid from 165-HWT through 2025. Ferrari is going to wrestle at 197, is my bet and Doucet can bulk to be a true heavyweight.

The times they've met it really hasn't been close between Ferrari and Doucet though. Ferrari is on another level.

If we don't get Ferrari then we need to get Braxton Amos. Either of those would make us solid at 197. Of course only one of those guys has a line of brothers following him...

I've been reflecting on this a ton lately and I really think that Fix and Wittlake taking Olympic redshirts would be hugely beneficial for this team.

That would make next year's lineup:
125: Sr. Piccinnini
133: Sr. Brock
141: So. Gfeller
149: Jr. Lewallen
157: Jr. Sheets
165: Sr. Shommers
174: Sr. Joe Smith
184: Fr. Montalvo
197: Jr. Geer
HWT: Fr. Putnam

That lineup isn't going to win any team national titles... but you have AAs in Picc, Brock, G, Boo, Joe, Montalvo, and Geer.

Ohio State redshirted a lot of guys this season to try and make a run at a title next season with some senior guys. Penn State is getting back several of their hammers with medical redshirts.

But if we can have a lineup that looks like the following for 2021-2024.... I think that would set up John Smith to make one more big run before riding off into the sunset with his program in the capable hands of one of our new superstars like Alex Dieringer.

Lets look at 2021 lineup and their respective recruiting rankings (which are nowhere near as subjective as in football)...

125: Fr. Trevor Mastrogiavanni (#5) or Fr. Jakason Burks (#3)
133: ORs So Daton Fix (#1)
141: Rs Jr. Kaden Gfeller (#9) or Rs. Fr Reece Witcraft (#4)
149: MRs Sr. Boo Lewallen (#7) or Kaden Gfeller
157: Rs Fr. Brevin Balmaceda (2) or Rs Fr. Daniel Manibog (11)
165: Fr. Dustin Plott (3)
174: ORs Fr. Travis Wittlake (1)
184: Rs So. Anthony Montalvo (4)
197: Fr. AJ Ferrari (1) or Fr. Braxton Amos (2) or Fr. Konner Doucet (3)
HWT: Fr. AJ Ferrari (1) or Fr. Braxton Amos (2) or Fr. Konner Doucet (3)

Obviously we need some things to fall our way... but that group has a ton of potential to just crush for us. Ohio State and Penn State are still going to be there and still going to be great... but our coaches are as good as anybody at developing... so starting with lighter fluid should help us build this bonfire.

2020 lineup looks good. In 2019, the rumor is that we will be getting a transfer at hwt from Purdue (though this is obviously not official)

Luke Surber (Tuttle) committed today. He’s in the class of 2020 and wrestled at 152 and, I think, has 2 state titles. It looks like he’s ranked 52-54 nationally. Possibly projects to 165 or 174.

Have Mastro & Jakasan wrestled? Both are pretty darn solid! Reece vs G would be fun to watch even though I think experience & strength would help G. Hopefully Reece’s ankle is healing up. There a timeline with AJ? Or he wanting to see how next year goes?
